Building an Audience with Facebook Groups

Chris Thomas

Chris runs an insanely popular pimple popping videos website that has gotten over 1 million monthly page views and also has a private group with over 50,000 members. Chris has also recently launched ConJunkies.com, a comic book convention calendar and tips blog, where he hopes to leverage his years of marketing experience to grow another large audience.

Some things we talked about:

  • Both sites can get paid when showing other people’s videos
  • He uses free content and a $50 website template
  • He uses Dreamhost dedicated WordPress hosting for $35 a month
  • Traffic to his site varies from month to month, and some of the variance is tied to his effort
  • How he started his Facebook groups and why
  • He announced on his Facebook page daily and later weekly about the group and also told about it in his newsletters
  • Registered a vanity URL to point to his Facebook group
  • Uses the group to drive traffic to the web site
  • Promotes affiliate products from time to time
Focuses on the audience and what they want
  • Monitors posts in the group and uses moderators
  • Asks where people are from in the group from time to time to get conversations going
  • Keeps focused that he must serve the audience to build the group
  • Put in the work with keywords
  • Polled audience
    …And much more
