I stopped and cleaned my eyeglasses today. That is such a mundane thing, and I know you probably can’t imagine it being worthy of writing about. But the reality is that the glasses sitting at my desk in my office have needed cleaning for at least two weeks. And I just haven’t stopped to take the time, even thought I could have much sooner.
As women we often neglect taking care of ourselves. We’re busy taking care of everyone around us–our husband, our children, or boyfriend, whomever–but we don’t stop to do the little things for ourselves.
I know that for me personally I will put up with all kinds of cell phone problems, computer problems and just limp along trying to get something done rather than stopping and spending the time to take care of the problem. The reason is that I hate having to learn new software, or taking the time to set up a new cell phone, or having down time with anything.
When I see an obstacle, it becomes all about “improvise, adapt and overcome.” I have a very high tolerance for difficult things, because I have had to deal with so much in my life. I’m all about “get it done” so I’m usually plowing through, taking names and kicking butt, pushing perfectionism to the side, and if you work for me, I’m dragging you with me. But while I have the illusion of getting things done, if it takes 20 times longer to do it my way then perhaps I would have been better off taking the day or two needed to overcome the situation in a lasting rather than temporary manner.
Right now my computer hard drive says it’s full. My computer won’t print to my printer–which is a regular occurrence around here–and my cell phone won’t let my Facebook app function properly without rebooting daily, sometimes multiple times a day. My OneDrive which I depend on is full. So sometimes I wonder where I should start when my plate is as full as the OneDrive and my hard drive.
But let’s talk about you for a moment. Take a minute and think about what things in your life that would benefit you but you’re neglecting. What could you do that would improve your life? Do you need to stop and clean your glasses? Do you need to take off that old toenail polish and paint your toenails? Do you just need a nice hot soak in the tub?
I invite you to take a moment to breathe deep and choose one thing to do for yourself instead of feeling overwhelmed. Stop limping along, drop what you’re doing, and practice self care. There’s a reason the airline always tells you to put your oxygen mask on first.
