Dan Lyon
Danny Lyon grew up in Barons, Alberta, a small town of about 200 people, which was Lyon’s learning grounds for commerce, networking and teamwork.
Danny has 3 children, Tommy (24), Davey (23) and Maggie (21).
Lyon loves sports, especially curling and baseball, and has completed 65 marathons.
After 20+ years in telecommunications, Lyon owned and operated a very successful Mail Boxes Etc./The UPS Store franchise in Lethbridge, Alberta from 1996 to 2007. He has been introducing, supporting and contributing expertise to people to get into business for themselves since 1998. Along with his partners, Lyon mentors, coaches, trains and supports over 100 The UPS Store Franchises in Alberta and Ontario, Canada. And, as well, Lyon provides coaching, training, support and workshops to different small business groups and individual small business owners.
In Lyon’s experience, people leverage, is the fastest road to success.
His book, The Colour of My Underwear is Blue, is about the support, answers, possibilities, opportunities and experience, already existing in anyone’s network, and how to recognize them and utilize them for maximum success.
Here is some of what we talked about:
- Simple marketing plan
- Missing the invitation to the party
- Visited local businesses 3 times before they opened
- Networking vs Marketing
- Be concerned about the other persons pain points
- Acknowledge how busy they are
- Don’t sell with the focus of selling
- What are some of the biggest mistakes when networking?
- If I have never networked before, how do I get started?
- By taking two hours to go out and network, people he coaches come back having gotten orders without selling
- Consider the contribution that you offer someone else
- Sometimes just the connection that you can offer helps someone else
- Leave the fears in the car
- Be interested in others, inquire about them
- Don’t hand out business cards unless they ask
- Who do I know that can help you?
- Look for the person that invited you and typically they will introduce you to at least two others
- After they ask about you, go back to being interested in them by asking questions
- People are interested in people who are interested in them!
- All of life is based in relationships
- Givers gain
- Give first, give often
- Dan donates all proceeds from his book and coaching to build Kenyan schools and other charitable groups
- His underwear is blue…
- And so much more!
